Troy Landry and Mr. Sterling Pursue a 14-Foot Giant in “Tree Breakers” | Swamp People S16E12

In Swamp People Season 16, Episode 12, titled “Tree Breakers”, which originally aired on March 20, 2025, Troy Landry joins forces with longtime friend and veteran hunter Mr. Sterling to chase a legendary 14-foot alligator in the Louisiana swamp. The day becomes a blend of tradition, innovation, and deep respect as they test an old-school floating bait method against one of the swamp’s most elusive giants.

“He said, ‘Troy, I know where they got an alligator that’s gonna be a record,’” Troy recalls. “He come off the bank, passed under my boat, raised it up, and knocked my brother down.”

A Styrofoam Strategy and Respect for Elders

The episode showcases Mr. Sterling’s signature technique: floating chicken bait on Styrofoam with the silver side up to reflect sunlight — a trick he swears draws in big gators. Troy and Pickle observe the process with admiration and curiosity.

“I find it’ll catch a better gator,” Sterling explains. “The sun shines on it, makes a little sparkle. Gets ‘em every time.”

Despite early disappointment with several smaller catches, they remain committed to the approach, noting that even the smaller gators show the method’s consistency.

Big Swings, Big Gators

After several attempts, Sterling lands a solid shot on a 12.5-foot gator — one of the largest they’ve caught all season. It may not be the elusive 14-footer, but it’s a big win that proves the strategy still works.

“That alligator’s ancient,” Troy says. “In my category,” Mr. Sterling adds.

Legacy Over Trophies

More than the hunt, the episode reflects on legacy and time. At 86 years old, Sterling’s participation is cherished by Troy.

“This could be our last time ever hunting together,” he reflects. “I wouldn’t trade it for nothing in the world.”

Though they fall short of the record-breaking monster, the team ends with a full boat and full hearts, vowing to return.

“That don’t mean we not gonna come back and try again,” Troy says. “We will find him.”
