For the longest time, Tyler and Duffy were the two bright spots aboard the fishing vessel, Pinwheel. Even when the sea got rough, or at times when they didn’t get a good haul, the pair always had each other’s back. This was until July of 2018 when Duffy passed away suddenly due to decompression sickness. And while Tyler did take some time off to honor his friend, he had to return to the sea, after all, the bluefin tuna would not wait for anyone. The new season of Wicked Tuna saw Tyler back on his fishing journey however this time he sought help within the family. The person who replaced the vacant seat of first mate is none other than Marissa McLaughlin.
Marrisa Mclaughlin is not your typical girl. She is a fearless fisher who has been catching giant bluefin tuna with her brother Tyler Mclaughlin, on the National Geographic reality show Wicked Tuna. Together, they sail on the Pinwheel, a boat that has earned a reputation for catching some of the biggest and most valuable bluefin tuna in the ocean. She also takes part in the spin-off show, Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Showdown, where she faces off with other boats from different regions for the ultimate tuna trophy. Marissa is not only a talented fisherwoman but also a college graduate and social media influencer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and communication from Suffolk University in Boston, where she honed her skills in reporting, writing, and editing.
Early Life & education:
Marissa McLaughlin was born on the 17th of April 1990 in New Hampshire, U.S.A. She is the daughter of Marty McLaughlin. While little is known about her mother, Marty is a passionate fisherman and the owner and president of McLaughlin Transportation. Marrisa and her elder brother Tyler grew up fishing with their father, who taught them everything they know about the sport.
Even though Marissa loved fishing as a little girl and everything seemed a perfect setup for a fisherman career, she had other hopes and aspirations. She was a good student in school and wanted to pursue a college degree. Following matriculation, Marissa studied Broadcast Journalism / Communications at Suffolk University and graduated in 2013.
Right after getting out of college, she started her career as an intern on May 7, 2014, at Coast Angler Magazine, a publication dedicated to fishing, boating and outdoor enthusiasts. During her 45 days internship, she worked with some of the best writers and photographers in the industry and learned from their experiences and tips. She then returned to New Hampshire where she started working with Mayflower Moving. She also obtained the highest level of boat captain license, 100-Ton USCG Master’s License which she acquired in 2017.
While Marissa would join her brother from time to time on his fishing adventures, things changed after the death of his first mate, Duffy. Following the death, Melissa took on the vacant position of the first mate. This also opened her opportunity for her in Wicked Tuna, a reality show that follows a group of fishermen who compete to catch the largest and most valuable bluefin tuna in the Atlantic Ocean.
Marissa joined the show in season 8 as the first mate of the Pinwheel. While she was an unknown name prior in the fishing world, she had backing from her brother. During the season 8 premiere, Tyler said:
“I’m afraid I might burn out this season, so I’m relying on Marissa to be a solid first mate. [Mar’s] got a lot to learn, but she’s got her captain’s license. She can navigate. She can read a radar. She knows how to drive the boat. She can run it when we’re fighting fish.”
Marissa had come in after a hugely successful season for Tyler and his boat. They were crowned winner of season 7 after catching 19 bluefin tuna worth $103, 936. Instead of letting pressure get to her head, Marissa quickly proved herself as a skilled and fearless fisherwoman, who can reel in giant tuna and handle rough seas. She also brought some fun and humor to the show, with her witty remarks and playful banter with her brother.
Marrisa also appears in the spin-off Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks, the show follows the competition and challenges faced by the fishermen who battle for the ocean’s most lucrative prize off the coast of North Carolina.
Marissa Mclaughlin has earned a decent amount of money from her fishing career and her appearance on Wicked Tuna. Her estimated net worth is around $700,000. She also makes money from endorsements and sponsorships on Instagram, where she has over 48k followers. Marissa lives a comfortable lifestyle and enjoys traveling and exploring new places. She also supports various causes and charities related to marine conservation and animal welfare.
Marissa McLaughlin and TJ Ott are two of the most popular and competitive captains on the hit reality show Wicked Tuna, which follows the thrilling and lucrative hunt for Atlantic bluefin tuna. But they are not only rivals on the water, they are also lovers off the screen.
The two have been dating secretly for quite some time, but only came to light in 2020, during the ninth season of Wicked Tuna. TJ Ott, who captains the Hot Tuna boat, casually mentioned that he had adopted a new dog with his girlfriend, who turned out to be none other than Marissa McLaughlin.
Since then, fans have been curious and excited about their romance, which seems to be going strong despite their professional competition. The couple has shared some adorable moments on the show, such as TJ making breakfast for Marissa after she missed two fish, or cheering her on from his own boat when she landed a catch.
However, they have also kept their relationship low-key and private, avoiding any drama or controversy. They have not revealed how they met or when they started dating, or whether they have any plans for the future. They have also not confirmed if they are married or engaged, as some rumors have suggested.
What is clear is that Marissa McLaughlin and TJ Ott share a passion for fishing and a respect for each other’s skills and achievements. They have proven that they can balance their love and their rivalry, and that they can support each other without compromising their own goals. They are truly a wicked tuna power couple.
