The Incredible Dr. Pol Cast now: What happened to them?
You can’t go wrong with Dr. Pol—the veteran veterinarian behind Pol Veterinary Services—who became a beloved figure on television through his dedication to animals and his no-nonsense approach. For years, he catered to the needs of both farm and domestic animals in rural Michigan, earning widespread recognition for his work. His adventures were chronicled in the long-running series The Incredible Dr. Pol, which offered viewers a unique look into the life of a country vet. Premiering on Nat Geo Wild on October 29, 2011, the show ran for 24 seasons and inspired several spin-offs. During its run, it received numerous accolades, including the Critics’ Choice Real TV Award for Best Animal/Nature Show in both 2019 and 2020. Balancing humor, drama, and heartfelt moments, the show struck a chord with audiences by showcasing the real-life challenges and rewards of veterinary practice.

The series introduced viewers to a dynamic and ever-evolving cast, both human and animal. Among the most familiar faces were members of Dr. Pol’s own family—his son Charles, wife Diane, and daughter-in-law Beth—who helped keep the clinic and the show grounded in family values. The veterinary team was a mix of seasoned professionals like Dr. Pol and Dr. Brenda, and newer faces like Dr. Lisa Jones and Dr. Nicole Arcy, who brought fresh perspectives and energy to the practice. Over the years, viewers also got to know former cast members such as Dr. Emily Thomas, Dr. Michele Sharkey, Dr. Elizabeth Grammar, and Dr. Sandra Wisniewski, many of whom left to pursue new career paths or personal goals. Rather than relying on celebrity replacements, the show continued to evolve by mentoring emerging talent, allowing new veterinarians to grow into their roles and connect with fans in their own right.
In this article, we will explore the cast of The Incredible Dr. Pol, who worked at Pol Veterinary Services in the Michigan countryside. We will also revisit the journeys of those who have since bid farewell to the series—looking at where they are now and what they’ve been up to since their time on the show.

Dr. Jan Harm Pol:
Jan Harm Pol, better known as Dr. Pol, is the founder and owner of Pol Veterinary Services, a veterinary clinic that has long served the rural community of Weidman, Michigan. Born in the Netherlands in 1942 and raised on a dairy farm, Dr. Pol developed a deep love for animals early on. He moved to the United States in 1971 with his wife Diane, whom he met as a foreign exchange student. After earning his veterinary degree from Utrecht University, he worked with another practice for 10 years before launching his own in 1981.

Following the end of his television series after 24 seasons, Dr. Pol has continued his hands-on work at the clinic. Even in his 80s, he remains actively involved in animal care—often treating both farm animals and pets with his signature no-nonsense, practical style. Beyond clinical work, he now engages with fans through social media and offers pet-care advice through his online platform, Dr. Pol Care. His mission of educating and serving the public remains strong, whether in person or online.
Dr. Pol has three adopted children and several grandchildren. With 248 episodes to his name, he stands as the most featured and recognizable cast member of The Incredible Dr. Pol.
Quotes by Dr. Pol:
“I’ve never known an animal to hurt another animal for absolutely no reason. Animals might be protecting themselves or their family, they might be hungry, or they might be territorial, but just to hurt another living thing? No, that doesn’t happen in nature. So I don’t think it’s correct for someone to refer to an awful person as an “animal.”
-Jan Pol, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow: My Life as a Country Vet
I always say, look in the animal’s eyes. It’s fantastic when you take time to read the animal. It makes no difference if it’s a horse, a cow, you know, anything, dogs and cats. They tell you what they want, if you just listen.
-Jan Pol, October/November 2016 issue of Nat Geo WILD magazine.
“I think a kid that grows up with dogs probably will make better adults, because the dog will teach the children empathy, compassion. You just have to teach them that they can trust you and you can trust them. There’s a breed for everybody! I cannot imagine life without a dog.”
-Jan Pol, on his show “The Incredible Dr.POl”
“Animals can fill a big void in your life…I you can not live without a dog.”
Diane Pol
Diane Pol is not only the wife of Jan Pol, but also his longtime partner in running Pol Veterinary Services. Born on February 6, 1944, in Mayville, Michigan, Diane first met Jan as a high school student in 1961. She earned a master’s degree in special reading and worked as a teacher before transitioning full-time into managing the family’s veterinary business.
Throughout the 24-season run of the show, Diane was a constant presence—often behind the scenes—as the office manager and administrative backbone of the clinic. She oversaw operations, managed finances, coordinated staff, and ensured client care, playing a critical role in the clinic’s continued success.
Following the show’s conclusion in July 2024, Diane has continued to support day-to-day operations at the clinic while also focusing more on her personal well-being. Now in her 80s, she balances her time between managing office duties and enjoying a quieter life. Although she rarely appears on camera, Diane remains an active and respected part of the Pol Veterinary team and still makes occasional public appearances through social media updates and fan messages.

Quotes
“I have always wanted to work on multiple species of animals. Growing up and even in school, I was told that I had to pick one type of species, or maybe a group of animals like large animals, small animals, or exotics. I was told that I couldn’t do them all well. But look at me now, I’m doing them all and I’m very excited.”
-Dr. Nicole Arcy

The cast who left “The Incredible Dr. Pol
Over the years, The Incredible Dr. Pol has seen many beloved team members depart for new opportunities, family priorities, or personal transitions. The Pol Veterinary family has also weathered heartbreaking losses, including the passing of Dr. Elizabeth Grammer’s husband, Robert, in 2016—a tragedy that led her to step away from the spotlight. The show also mourned the loss of Dr. Michele Louise Sharkey, DVM, whose quiet passion for animal care began decades earlier—as a young client at the clinic, holding the reins of her horse.
Dr. Ray Harp
Dr. Ray Harp was a new addition to the team of Dr. Jan Pol. Dr. Harp joined Pol Veterinary Services as an associate veterinarian on July 1, 2019, after being inspired by watching Dr. Pol’s show and deciding to pursue veterinary school. He was born and raised in Kansas, where he graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor of science degree in biology. He then worked at a dog daycare in Philadelphia, before going back to KSU to earn his degree as a vet technician. He later returned to school again to become a veterinarian. He made his debut on the show in 2020 and appeared in 17 episodes until 2021. However, he did not come back for the 20th season, nor the 21st season, of the show. According to the show’s executive producer Charles Pol, Dr. Harp left the clinic for family reasons. He has since moved to Colorado, where he works as a veterinarian. His departure from the show was not explained on air, and fans were sad to see him go.

She treated all kinds of animals, from cows and horses to dogs and cats, and had a great rapport with Dr. Pol and the other staff members. However, in 2019, after making her last appearance in season 15 episode 11, “Little Pol Peep”, she decided to leave the show and move to Virginia with her family. She wanted to spend more time with her husband and three children, and also find a less hectic work environment. Dr. Emily, who was born Emily Keene on April 1, 1984, in Georgia, now works at Virginia Warren County Veterinary Clinic. We hope she misses her camera days and returns to Michigan and the show “Dr. Pol” someday.

Dr. Sharkey’s connection with Dr. Jan Pol’s clinic began long before she wore a white coat. In a full-circle moment, she first appeared in the show’s very first episode in 2011 as a young horse owner seeking treatment for her beloved Scout. Years later, after earning her veterinary degree from Ross University, she returned to the clinic in Season 13 (2018) as a licensed DVM. Over the course of 11 episodes, fans watched her handle cases with calm confidence, from farm emergencies to festive pet crises in episodes like “Meow-y Christmas” and “You Can’t Handle the Tooth.”

In 2019, Michele left Michigan to follow her heart to Missouri, working at Jones Animal Clinic, before eventually making her longtime dream a reality: relocating to Colorado. By 2022, she had joined SouthPark Animal Clinic in Littleton, where her new colleagues welcomed her with a themed “Shark Week” celebration—a fitting nod to her sense of humor and surname.
Away from the clinic, Michele lived a quiet, joy-filled life. She loved hiking, puzzles, and doting on her four cats—Luna, Leo, Loki, and Lila. Her friends fondly remembered her love for Beyoncé, her spontaneous road trips, and above all, the kindness she showed in every part of her life. Unfortunately, Dr. Sharkey passed away on July 30, 2024, at the young age of 34.

She had married her fiancé Chris Shindorf in 2014, and they had their first child, a daughter named Madilynn, in 2016. Her husband lived in Belding, Michigan, while she worked in Weidman, Michigan, which made it difficult for them to spend time together. She gave birth to her second child, a son named Sam, in 2019. Devastated by his death, Dr. Elizabeth attempted to take her own life and was hospitalized in a psychiatric ward at Macon Medical Center. She left the show and took a break from veterinary work to cope with her loss. She now works at “Animal Amour Veterinary Hospital and Pet Lodge” in Hampton, Georgia. I miss Dr Emily the most, and I wish her and her family happiness in West Virginia.Your and family’s happiness is what’s important.
What happened to Dr. Erin who was there for 2 episodes in 2017? Her first episode was called Beginner’s Yuck. After those 2 episodes, we never heard from her again, and there doesn’t seem to be any online reference to her. Also, Dr Michele’s online information says that she left and moved back to Missouri. Any news about that?
I miss dr. Emily very much!
I am loving Dr. Nicole so hopefully she will show us some of her personal life. Also would like to see some of Dr. Brenda personal life. Maybe the producers could do a special that focuses on personal life of the people on the show. We have seen some of Dr. Pol home activities, or trips but nothing on the others except Dr. Emily a little. I would love love it and so would a lot of fans I imagine. I hope they realize they are tv stars as well as Vets.
A newcomer in watching Dr. Pol and oh!, how I love the show!! I’m a farmer from way back and I enjoy watching Dr. Pol use his vet skills and common sense while working with animals. Recording every episode especially the large animals. I must mention Ms, Brenda -she is great also!!
GRACE
If only Charles could keep his hands out of his pockets ! Drives me crazy.
I would be happy if he would just take a weed eater to his dad’s property. I think doc would like that. Best show ever.
Love the show first time ITuned in DR BRenda was “replacing some kind of prolapsed something “and have been hooked ever since. Will very much miss Emily but you have to do what you have to do. Love Brenda and would love to nose in on a little of her personal story. Looking forward to the new season starting. My husband and I have fun diagnosing problems. Wish he could meet our Roy( our 16 mo old Labordor Retriever) for a rabies vaccine or something fun. Best wishes to everyone!
I really missed Dr. Emily. She was remarkable, no matter the problem, she would go all out to help the animals. I wish her well, but wish she would come back.
I miss .Dr. Emily. She is a great vet who go all out to help the animals. I wish her well. I hope One day she will return to the show even as a guest star.
I miss Dr. Emily, but wish her all the happiness, and peace in the world at her new and calmer job.
What happened to Charles. He and his wife were expecting a baby and then we heard nothing more. LOVE the show. Have been fans for many years. Never get tired of seeing babies born and happy endings for injured and sick pets.
I love the show. Who knew when I was growing up across the road from where he was practicing in Harbor Beach at the time, that he would years later be a TELEVISION STAR!! Dr. Pol you’re awesome.
Thank you for a GREAT SHOW, Not to forget the staff at Pol Veterinary Services.
OMG ! I did not know that Dr. Emily is now in West Virginia how could I watch Dr. Pol without Dr. Emily I feel said I won’t see her anymore but as long as she is very happy in her new endeavors I am all for her….What can I say, I find her very adorable especially without makeup on, good luck Dr. Emily I wish you the best in life with you and your family.
I love the fact that every single person that works with
Dr. Pol actually cares for and loves the animals. I
worked with a vet in New York who only cared about
his bank account! All of my “critters” are my family!
I would love a visit to their office and help in any way.
Meeting everyone would be incredible!
My prayers are with you all and all of the “critters”
who need your help.
Saw first new episode tonight.(12/26/20) and almost immediately noticed Charles isn’t wearing a wedding ring, and no mention of his wife. Are they divorced and was the baby born.healthy?
I love Dr Pol’s show. However, I would only trust Dr Poll and Dr Brenda to touch my animals. The others are OK except for Dr. Emily. I am glad Dr Emily is gone. Too many animals she touched died – far more than the other vets. I would never allow her to treat my animals unless she was the only vet left. That mother goat she killed was the last straw for me. Good riddance to Dr Emily.
You may have been watching an episode that was made before he was married. There were quite a few seasons before they married. They gave been showing a marathon so I imagine that’s why he had no ring yet.
I miss Dr Emily for her personal demeanor and professionalism .I would also like to see more of Andrea. She is very good as a vet technician
Jim Hamill Canton Ohio Jan 2021
I love this show. Some thing on t.v. worth watching. Reminds me of my days on the farm. Best time of my life. Dr pol cares..its not always about the money.
When’s the show coming back on?
Does Charles ever do anything? Reminds me of a lazy son who is a spoiled worthless lazy tag along.
I just recently started watching this show and I love it! But I really miss Dr. Emily, I wish she would of stayed on with Dr. Pol.
Really? Not only does Charles help out on a lot of heavy jobs, but he produces the show and has his own family and farm.
I love this show so much!!!! It is my mom and my favorite show. I love Charles’s antics the best, and our favorite vet was Dr. Emily. She was always so dedicated, stoic and real. So sorry she is gone, but Dr. Brenda is awesome too. Love her! All of the vets are great but Brenda is special. I hope this show is on for many more years. Love you, Dr. Pol!!!!
I love the show and of course I to miss Dr. Emily. She was very funny and a very good veterinarian. Also my thoughts about not having people of color on the show. People of color have animals too, pets, farms in Michigan. I know that Michigan is or was a red state but if you love to treat animals then treat animals that has people of color owners.
I have a little dog who is called Roxy and she loves watching Dr. Pol. When we wakeup in the mornings she sets on the edge of the bed waiting for me to turn on the TV so see can watch The Incredible Dr Pol.
I watch the show with a slightly different interest. My father was a veterinarian who tragically died about a year after graduating from Vet school. His plan, before he died, was to move his family from Central California to rural Idaho and set up a veterinary practice, much like Pol Veterinary Services. As I watch the show I am looking at what my life would have been like growing up as the son of the county Veterinarian. Not a bad life! As things turned out I stayed in Central California, learned to fly (probably would not have happened if I lived in rural Idaho) became an airline pilot and flew for my airline for 40+ years including 7 years in the left seat of the 747 flying all over the world. Also, not a bad life! Thank you Dr Pol, his family and staff.
l would like to breed my bernes mounton dog one the staf has to would be wiling to me some sperm to do the do thank you very much great show big fan in ont.
Have always enjoyed Dr. Pol and Dr. Brenda. Dr. Nicole is a great addition. She’s always so happy, really smart and fits in so well. Dr. Lisa seems to need some more supervision. I wouldn’t want her to see my pet. Wish Dr. Emily all the best in Virginia. Sorry to hear of all her troubles in Michigan. She made some unfair complaints about Dr. Pol on her blog.
I wonder what happened to Andrea the vet tech. Haven’t seen her in while.
Overall Dr. Pol is my favorite vet show on tv! Hope Doc Pol never retires!
I thought it was incredibly inappropriate and insensitive for you to have commented on Dr. Grammar’s personal health issues. I am sure she has suffered enough without this tabloid sensationalism.
he eats a lot…
Dr Ray is not on the show but still works for dr. pol. he just is not televised. It may have been hard for him, as it was for dr. emily, to do a show and have a family.
Those of us hardcore emily lovers can see her on her own website- it’s got her videos and her insight

My favorite show on TV. I’m 79 and got a Black Lab 4 years ago. Never had dog before. She’s the runt of the litter at 45 lbs. I have a sign on the wall that says “Beware of dog SHE WILL STEAL YOUR HEART” and she has. Dr Pol is truly amazing. Ive tried to watch other shows, but find them lacking.
I have enjoyed Dr. Pol and all his associates for as long as I can remember. The photography on the show is so beautiful it makes me proud to be a Michigander. I loved Dr. Emily, too, was sorry she had to leave but a good opportunity came up and that was it.
My family has watched this show for many years. My husband was an animal control officer an care giver to the animals. They all liked him first lick..he calmed many that had been hit by cars an attacked by bigger animals . We always had dogs or cats some cows some horses some goats ..an others ..the stock yard was close by an when the calfs would get out we would catch them an put them in a dog pin to hold them till they were returned to stock yards.. Dr.Pol is a wonderful show to show people of this day an age of such power to hurt every living thing.. they show the gentle ness that the animals deserve.. An hope that our god sees those kind of people a wonderful. An the ones that hurt an distory the animals. My little dog now was dumped off on a country road in winter of below temps..she could have been a bad dog but she has won me in thirty seconds .She was visiter at the veterans home where my husband was and she won a lot of new people in one little lick an sit on there laps in wheel chairs .. she many new friends..She now takes care of me after my husband died .. she realized I needed her she makes me feel like living..
Charles is still married and he and his wife show their daughter all the time. His wife is also pregnant with a second child, a boy. They show everything in seasons 18-20.
I enjoy watching Dr Arcy. Her positive outlook makes a really positive impact.
Dr Pol is an Icon and hero of the animal kingdom. His personality and skills cant be duplicated. This show is both entertaining and informative. This show is not about the personal lives of the vets. I love the show and watch reruns. The only negative is Charles Pol. He is annoying. We call him Chicken Chuck. He makes a lousy appearance. He squints and trips on himself and should not have a speaking part. I will watch the show as long as it is on. Thank you all for the continuation.
I have just now (June 2022) started watching “The Incredible Dr. Pol” and I cannot get enough of it! I just love the show, and hope it will be on television for a very long time.
I hope Dr. Brenda will continue to be on the show, I just love her, as well as Dr. Nicole and Dr. Lisa.
I love the show! I didn’t grow up living on a farm but started working on the local farms outside of Pittsburgh, PA at 8 yrs old. I would have loved working with Dr Pol and this great crew. I too miss Dr Emily, but think Dr’s Lisa and Nicole are excellent replacements. I have to admit though (and please don’t tell my wife) that I have a crush on Dr Lisa. I think she is pretty, smart, funny and is a great vet with charming beside manner. Ya gotta love her smile too. Oh if only I was single half my age and lived in Michigan. Years ago I did live in wild wonderful Rose City for a time. Also must give a shout out to the hard working Dr Brenda and Dianne, that is the obvious glue that holds this wonderful group together. God bless you all for being the best of who you are and for doing the work that you do for your neighbors and our animal friends.
PS: Never lose your special sweetness DR Lisa!
What about the office staff and vet tech’s? Where is Andrea, Missy, Kayla, Kristin, etc…
I love the show and have watched since it first came on. Just an observation, it has lost some of it’s personality. Lots has happened, Dr. Emily left (She was funny), Charles got married and now has children, and then the pandemic hit. I miss the personal side, like Dr. Brenda’s night out with the girls. I miss the events Charles used to initiate at the clinic, Halloween dress up, pumpkin carving, Pie Day, the turkey Charles cooked for the clinic staff. Having a family is serious, but Charles hardly smiles or laughs anymore. I still will love the show, but like I said. It has lost some of it’s personality.
Dr Pol is an awesome guy, I watched all of his series and rewatch them all the time. He is a one of a kind and I love watching all of the other Dr’s too, especially Dr Brenda and Dr Emily. I like Charles too and Dianne is the best wife/mother ever.
What is with the new office staff? What happened to the ladies that have been there the whole time?
