Stephanie Abrams: Early Life and Education

Stephanie Abrams was born on October 27, 1978, in Wellington, Florida. She grew up in West Palm Beach, where she was raised primarily by her father, Barry Abrams, who was a physician and an avid lover of science and telescope. Stephanie developed a keen interest in science and adventure growing up in her hometown. She often went on trips with her father to observe comets, eclipses, and geysers.

Those early years also make Stephanie realized the importance and power of weather because of her experience with Hurricane Andrew and its impact in 1992. She witnessed the destruction caused by the storm in Florida and decided to take a meteorology class during her University years. Stephanie attended Wellington High School. She was a cheerleader and a tennis player and also participated in Space Camp, a program that provides hands-on experience in aerospace education. After graduation, she enrolled at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1996.

At the University of Florida, Stephanie Abrams majored in geography, with a minor in mathematics. She chose geography because it was closely related to meteorology, and she wanted to learn more about the physical and human aspects of the Earth. She graduated with honors in 1999 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, a prestigious academic honor society. She was also a member of Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, where she served as president of the chapter.

Stephanie Abrams continued her education at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where she earned a second bachelor‚Äôs degree in meteorology in 2002.  She graduated cum laude and worked as a teaching assistant, helping other students learn about the science of weather. She also gained practical experience by practicing on-air forecasts on FSU Live, a student-run news and weather production on a local cable channel. She said about FSU, “I think the professors made a difference in that they were so engaged with the kids and also there were small classes there, so it was really nice that the class hung out together, and it was nice to have that kind of environment.”

Stephanie Abrams: Professional Career

Abrams began her professional career as a morning meteorologist at WTXL, the ABC affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida. She joined The Weather Channel in 2003 as a reporter and fill-in meteorologist, and soon rose to prominence as a co-host of various shows, such as Weekend View, Abrams and Bettes: Beyond the Forecast, and Weather Center. She also co-anchored Wake Up With Al with Al Roker on weekday mornings from NBC studios in New York from 2009 to 2015. She gained recognition for her live reporting of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where she and Roker covered the weather and sports events for Wake Up With Al and AMHQ. She also occasionally filled in for Roker on Today, and joined Sam Champion on AMHQ. After Wake Up With Al was canceled in 2015, Abrams returned to work from The Weather Channel’s studios in Atlanta. She also co-hosted On The Radar and Morning Rush, Weekend Recharge, CBS Mornings, and Top 100 Weather Moments. She is currently a co-host of AMHQ with Jen Carfagno and Jim Cantore; and Weather Gone Viral.

Abrams is a member of the National Weather Association (NWA) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and was president of the North Florida chapter of the AMS from 2002 to 2003.
