Dustin Hurt is a gold miner who has a thirst for adventure, a taste for danger, and a flair for fire. As one of the Dakota Boys, he followed his father and boss, Dakota Fred Hurt (deceased), in their daring quest to find gold in the most remote and hostile places on Earth. He is also a former wildland firefighter who can handle the heat and the pressure of any situation. He is also a reality TV star who has appeared in several shows on the Discovery Channel, such as Gold Rush, Gold Rush: White Water, and Gold Rush: Winter’s Fortune. He is a loyal partner to Arin Alhum Hanson, an artist and a photographer who has accompanied him on his mining trips and supported him through thick and thin. A man of many talents and interests, Dustin enjoys traveling, hiking, fishing, hunting, playing guitar, and driving fast cars and motorcycles. He is a millionaire who has earned his fortune from his hard work and dedication. This is Dustin Hurt, and this is his story.
Finding his Feet
Dustin Hurt is the son of Fred Hurt and Lorrayne Hurt. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dustin has revealed very little information about himself. The reality star remains tight-lipped about his early life and would rather talk about his work. Dusting started working with his father ever since he was 16 years of age. This was way back in the day when Justin had just graduated from high school.
After working with his father for eight-odd years, Justin received his license to work as a wildland firefighter for California Forest Service. The work required Dustin to travel to remote locations to suppress wildfires. As a part of the self-contained unit specializing in wildfire suppression tactics, Dustin had to be handy with chainsaws and axes to cut fire breaks. The experience came in handy for Justin who now specializes in heavy equipment.
Relationship with his Father
Dustin Hurt and Fred Hurt were not the first father and son combo in the reality TV series, Gold Rush. But the pair did share an unusual relationship. During their time together in the series, Dustin was never seen calling Fred, ‘Dad’. He often referred to his father as Fred and this puzzled fans around the world. So when Fred was finally quizzed as to why Dustin doesn’t call him Dad, Fred revealed that,
“Well, he started working for me when he was 16 and he said it wasn’t cool to call your boss “Dad.” It’s just sorta stuck and it’s like a nickname now”.

Dakota Fred Hurt passed away on July 11, 2023, a day after his 80th birthday. Fred was diagnosed with stage brain cancer in May 2023 and has been fighting the disease. Not just the Hurt family, the world of gold mining has lost one of its most beloved and adventurous stars. Fred Hurt was a self-taught prospector, nicknamed for his North Dakota roots, and was known for his passion, energy and outspokenness as he searched for gold in the Alaskan wilderness with Dustin and a loyal crew.
Dustin and his father regularly appeared on the reality TV series, Gold Rush. Even though the pair left the series on more than one occasion, they came back for more. A part of the Dakota Boys, the group left the series during its fifth season but later returned. During their time off, the crew managed to shoot a TV documentary entitled All That Glitters.
Dustin joined the series after his father sent out an SOS call. And while the father-son combo often fights on several occasions, the pair are quick to reconcile. Over the years Dustin has appeared in Gold Rush and its several spin-offs including Gold Rush: White Water (2018-2022), Gold Rush: The Dirt (2013-2021), and Gold Rush: Winter’s Fortune (2021).
