From sexual harassment allegations to his controversial statements on politics, Mark Halperin has a lot on his plate. While his professional career has been falling in pieces, his personal life remains more or less intact. For over 18 years, Halperin is tolerated by his wife Karen Avrich, and going by the things Halperin spurs on, it is not exactly easy to be the girlfriend of Mark Halperin. A political junkie herself, Karen and Mark share similar political beliefs. In this article, we will take a closer look at the wiki-bio of Karen Avrich.
Karen Avrich was born on the 6th of January, 1967, to Paul and Ina Avrich. Her father, Paul Avrich, is a popular historian who is known for his work on the early 20th-century anarchist movement in Russia and the United States. A historian, Paul spent his entire career at the Queens College i.e. from 1961 to 1999. Unfortunately, Paul passed away on the 16th of February, 2006, due to Alzheimer’s. As a young kid, Karen spent most of her early life with her sister, Jane. Given that the family was constantly moving, details on Karen’s academics have not been revealed to the media. But considering her work as a writer and editor, it is safe to say that Karen holds a bachelor’s degree.
Completing her father’s legacy:
While he lived, Paul Avrich worked on 12 different books in anarchy. Around the time he was hospitalized, Paul was working on his new book entitled, Sasha and Emma: The Anarchist Odyssey of Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman. After Paul was hospitalized, he asked Karen to finish the book for him. Writing on Times Op-ed, Karen revealed,
“Rather blithely, I agreed. I was a writer with a knack for research and a background in history; the subject was compelling; it would be a good opportunity to learn more about my father’s oeuvre. (I was abashed at reaching adulthood without having read all of his published books). Above all, I wanted to help. We had little time, however, for a conventional collaboration.”
The book was published in 2012 and received nationwide acclaim. Her innate knack of writing has often been discussed by her boyfriend Mark Halperin, as well. As Halperin revealed in 2004, Karen acted as a fail-safe system for Halperin’s books and would check if he had missed anything. An editor and writer, Karen often writes an op-ed for The New York Times, The Times, and The New Yorker amongst others.
While neither Karen nor Mark revealed when and where they met, the pair began dating around 2002. While the pair are not married, they do have a baby boy who was born in January of 2017. When Mark was accused of harassment claims in October of 2017, Karen decided to hold her silence than to come forward on the media. She doesn’t have any social media accounts and rarely likes mixing her professional and private life. While many fans thought that the allegations would become the end for the pair, they have managed to tough this out and continue to be together.
