Malia White was born on the 20th of July 1990, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Born and raised in Florida, Malia spent much of her early life in the sea. Her father worked in a boatyard back in the day and would take Maria fishing. She helped her father in whatever way she could. As a young kid, Maria was active in athletics. She was also good at her studies and got excellent grades during her high school years. On the side, she pursued Dive Master certification and qualified for a captain’s license in 2007. She also travel around the world thanks to the passes she gained from her mother who worked as a flight attendant for 30 years before retirement.
After achieving her captain’s license in 2007, Malia moved to Hawaii and started working as a Diving instructor. She also pursued her Bachelor’s education and enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2008 where she completed a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Over the years, Malia worked in Hawaii and across the mainland USA. She landed her big break in 2017 when she was invited to work on the reality TV series, Below Deck: Mediterranean. Malia was overjoyed by the prospect and joined the series as a deckhand.
Below Deck Mediterranean
Season 2: Malia joined the show as a deckhand in season 2, which aired in 2017. She was new to the yachting industry and had never worked on a super yacht before. She quickly learned the ropes and impressed her bosun, Wes Walton, with her skills and enthusiasm. She also caught the attention of two other crew members, chef Adam Glick and fellow deckhand Bobby Giancola, who both developed romantic feelings for her. Malia found herself in a love triangle with Adam and Wes, and eventually chose to date Wes after he promoted her to lead deckhand. However, their relationship did not last long after the season ended.
Malia returned to the show as the bosun in season 5, which aired in 2020. She made history as the first female bosun on the Below Deck franchise. She had gained more experience and qualifications in the yachting industry since season 2, and had obtained her 200-ton Captain’s License. She was confident and assertive in leading her deck team, which consisted of Pete Hunziker, Alex Radcliffe and Robert Westergaard. She also rekindled her romance with chef Tom Checketts, who joined the show as a replacement for Kiko Lorran. However, Malia faced some challenges and controversies during the season. She clashed with chief stewardess Hannah Ferrier over cabin arrangements and reported her for having prescription drugs on board without informing Captain Sandy Yawn. This led to Hannah’s dismissal from the show and Malia’s backlash from fans who accused her of sabotaging Hannah. Malia also had to deal with Tom’s temper tantrums in the galley and his constant complaints about the yacht’s equipment and provisions. Their relationship eventually ended after the season wrapped up.
Malia came back to the show as the bosun again in season 6, which premiered in 2021. She was eager to prove herself as a leader and a mentor to her new deck team, which included Mzi “Zee” Dempers, David Pascoe and Lloyd Spencer. She also wanted to redeem herself from the drama of season 5 and show a different side of herself to the viewers. She had a friendly and professional relationship with chief stewardess Katie Flood, who replaced Hannah Ferrier. She also got along well with chef Mathew Shea, who replaced Tom Checketts. Malia showed her adventurous spirit and fun personality by participating in various water sports and activities with the guests and the crew. She also demonstrated her courage and compassion by helping Lloyd when he suffered from a panic attack on board. Malia received praise from Captain Sandy for her performance and growth as a bosun throughout the season.
