Kimberly was born on March 4, 1982, in Memphis, a city known for its rich musical heritage. She grew up in a family that encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. She learned to play piano and guitar at a young age, and took voice lessons from Bob Westbrook, a renowned vocal coach who also trained Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
Kimberly excelled in academics as well as music. In the year 2000, Kimberly completed her high school education at Overton in Memphis, a city that nurtured her musical talent. She impressed the judges at FAMU with her unique yodeling skills and secured a scholarship to study music. She was honored as the Freshman Attendant of the Homecoming Court when she was only 18 years old. She also joined the prestigious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Kimberly balanced her studies and motherhood after giving birth to a son in September 2004. She graduated from FAMU with honors and was accepted into several law schools. However, she decided to follow her dream of becoming a professional singer and moved to Atlanta to pursue music full-time.
After graduating, she signed her first record deal with Jive Records in 2009 and released several singles that gained popularity on the R&B charts, such as “Fakin’ It”, “Fallin’”, “How Many Times”, and “I Just Can’t Do This”. She left Jive Records and, in 2012, joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, where she revealed her abusive relationship with her former boyfriend and record producer Memphitz. She also signed with Atlantic Records and began working on her debut album.
Her debut album, Rebellious Soul, was released in 2013 and received critical acclaim and commercial success. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. She won a Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist and a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist for her album.
She followed up with her second album, Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?, in 2014, which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Love ‘Em All”, “Maybe I Should Call”, and “Hard to Do”. She also joined Robin Thicke for his Blurred Lines Tour and launched her own reality show, K. Michelle: My Life. She collaborated with Keyshia Cole for her My Twisted Mind Tour in 2015 and released her third album, More Issues Than Vogue, in 2016. The album included the singles “Not a Little Bit” and “Ain’t You” and received positive reviews from critics.
She released her fourth album, Kimberly: The People I Used to Know, in 2017, and featured the singles “Birthday”, and “Either Way”. She also changed her stage name to Kimberly and appeared on Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood as a main cast member. She released her fifth album, All Monsters Are Human, in 2020.
Throughout her career, K. Michelle has been recognized for her powerful vocals, honest lyrics, and outspoken personality.
