Who is J. K. Rowling’s Daughter Jessica Arantes?

We all know the story of how J.K. Rowling came up with Harry Potter while sitting at a coffee shop beside the train station. Since then, J.K. Rowling has become a household name around the world. Her works are considered legendary and are something that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. But while most of Rowling’s life has been in the media for all to see, there is little to no information about her first marriage which lasted a year. Before tying the knot with Neil Murray, Rowling was married to Jorge Arantes and even had a daughter, Jessica Arantes. In this article, we will bring everything to know about Jessica Arantes.

Early Life

Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes was born on the 27th of July 1993 in Porto, Portugal. She is the daughter of J.K. Rowling, the famous author of the Harry Potter series, and Jorge Arantes, a former journalist. Her mother drew inspiration for her name from the English author, Jessica Mitford. She spent her childhood in Scotland with her mother after her parents divorced when she was a baby.

A rough childhood

J.K. Rowling was married to Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes on the 16th of October, 1992. However, the pair’s marriage lasted for only a year. When Jessica was five months old, her parents divorced and Rowling took Jessica with her to Edinburgh, Scotland. When her father decided to follow them, Rowling filed for a restraining order against Arantes. While neither J.K. nor Jessica revealed the details of Rowling’s first marriage during Rowling’s early years of fame, she came square when she released over-3,000 words essay, which read,

“I managed to escape my first violent marriage with some difficulty, but I’m now married to a truly good and principled man, safe and secure in ways I never in a million years expected to be. However, the scars left by violence and sexual assault don’t disappear, no matter how loved you are, and no matter how much money you’ve made. My perennial jumpiness is a family joke – and even I know it’s funny – but I pray my daughters never have the same reasons I do for hating sudden loud noises, or finding people behind me when I haven’t heard them approaching.”

Adulthood and Career

Jessica was only four years old when “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was released. She grew up witnessing her mother’s rise to fame and fortune, but also the challenges and pressures that came with it. She had to deal with the media attention. She also had to adjust to having a new father figure in her life, when Rowling married Neil Murray, a doctor, in 2001. Jessica gained two half-siblings from this marriage: David and Mackenzie.

Jessica has always been supportive of her mother’s work, but she has never shown any interest in following in her footsteps as a writer. Instead, she pursued her passion for fashion and beauty, becoming a social media influencer and a model.

Personal life and escaping fame

Part of why there is little information about Jessica’s early years is that she spent most of her time away from media attention. Rowling didn’t want her kids to feel pressured due to the media and opted for a hands-off approach. As a grown-up now, Jessica knows how to handle media attention and live completely off the radar. In 2021, Jessica made headlines when she was about to get married to her fiancee whose identity has not been revealed.
