Growing up, James had a passion for crafting and wanted to make knives. The passion turned into something serious and James began his training in 1995. He worked out of a small workshop in the woods of Towanda, Pennsylvania polishing his skills day and night. After an unusual training period of nine years, James finally decided that it was the right time to show his skills to the world.

Professional Life:

James professionally began selling his knives sometime during the early 2000s. He was renowned for using traditional methods of knife forging. An expert in the sole-authorship technique of forging, James handled everything on his own. James worked on every step of weapon creation and design and made sure each product was unique from the other. His hard work and dedication earned him the position of Mastersmith in the American Bladesmith Society. He was recognized in 2008 in an official ceremony by society. The title of Mastersmith is held by less than 115 people worldwide. 

Life in Reality TV:

Even though James was renowned amongst blade enthusiasts, his first ticket to worldwide fame came in the form of the reality series, Forged in Fire. James was asked to take up the mantle of Judge in the reality series. With over 20 years of experience in forging knives and blades, James is one of the best in the trade. His expertise is visible in his critiques and is valued highly by aspiring blade masters. 

Neilson made his television debut in “Forged in Fire” and it proved to first step of many to come. Neilson appeared on the judges’ panel of Forged in Fire: Beat the Judges in 2020. He also joined the spinoff Forged in Fire: Best Of appearing in 11 episodes from 2021-2022.

Personal Life:

J. Nealson was married to Rebecca “Beckie” Allen-Neilson. The pair exchanged wedding vows on February 3, 2013. How the two met is an interesting story, Nealson approached her through a dating website back in 2009 and in no time the pair hit it off. By profession a certified nurse anesthetist, Beckie was previously married and had a son from the relationship.

Neilson and Beckie were married for 9 years before her passing. Beckie passed away on April 30, 2022, after she did not wake up from a nap. She was cremated and her remains were spread in the ocean.

Like Beckie, J. Neilson was a divorcee. Although Neilson has not shared about his ex, he indeed gave birth to a daughter with her. Neilson has a 14-year-old daughter. He is also a father to a son named Danny who is the eldest of his two children.

Both his children are interested in the process of forging and Neilson has taken the opportunity to share their work on social media.

Injury:

Even though James Neilson is a regular on Forged in  Fire, he had to take a break from the show.  This was due to an injury Neilson sustained. Nelson slipped and fractured a small bone in his hand. Thinking of it as a small accident, Neilson left the checkup for much later. The reignited injury kept causing problems for Neilson and he had to take a break from the series. As of 21/22, Neilson has been a regular judge on the show.
