He specializes in obesity management and is known for promoting vegan foods. He was part of the documentary series Big Medicine which chronicled the weight loss transformation of obese patients under the care of Garth Davis and his father.

Early Life

Garth Philip Davis was born on January 28, 1970, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the son of Robert Davis who is also a bariatric surgeon, and Arlene Davis who passed away some years ago. Garth spent his early years in South Africa and later moved to United States alongside his siblings, Kim Callaway, and Toni Davis Friedman.

After matriculation, Garth attended the University of Texas and graduated with a Phi Betta Kappa. He pursued his further education at the Baylor College of Medicine. His excellent performance during his college years saw Garth inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Garth completed his surgical residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Professional Career

After finishing his surgical residency, Garth established The Davis Clinic in Huston, Texas. He did so with the support of his father who would cover for him while he worked as the assistant professor of surgery at The University of Texas-Houston. Over the years, Garth worked with Houston Methodist Hospital and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.

Big Medicine:

The father-son duo made a name for themself in the field of obesity management and began to get traction around the United States. The fame helped them become part of a reality television show on the TLC channel. Titled Big Medicine, the series followed the work of Garth Davis and his father Robert Davis at Methodist Weight Management Center in Houston as they help obese people with weight loss transformation.

The reality show premiered on May 28, 2007, and wrapped up its first season with 13 episodes on August 20, 2007. It was renewed for the second season which premiered on January 9, 2008. Following two season Big Medicine was canceled. According to IMDb, Garth Davis appeared in six episodes from 2007-2009.

Growing up, Garth himself suffered from fat-related issues. He was diagnosed with high cholesterol and fatty liver in 2006. Following the diagnosis, Garth started advocating for ketosis and decided to cut out meat from his diet. He wrote a book based on his journey entitled, Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession with Meat Is Killing Us. The book was published in 2015 and was critically acclaimed for the practices of Ketosis. Prior to this, he wrote “The Expert’s Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery.”

Personal Life

Dr. Garth Davis is currently married to Kelly Davis. The pair tied the knot on July 15, 2006. In the years as a married couple, the pair have given birth to two lovely children. The family of four live in Ashville, North Carolina. The pair moved to Ashville in 2018 following Davis’s appointment as the Medical Director of the weight management clinic of Mission Health.
