Robert ‘Bo’ W. Welch III was born on the 30th of November, 1951, in Yardley, Pennsylvania, United States. The only child of the family, Welch spent most of his early life in Yardley with his father, who worked as a firefighter, and his mother, who worked as a cashier at the local supermarket.

Welch developed an interest in movies at a very young age but continued with his education after high school instead of trying his hand at the trade. He graduated from a local high school in 1969 and enrolled at the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973.

Professional Career:

Interested in the creative side of making movies, Welch made his debut in the entertainment industry in 1983 with the movie, The Star Chamber. The same year, Welch also worked on Heart of Steel. After working on Swing Shift, Best Defense, and The Hoboken Chicken Emergency as an art director in 1984, Welch made his debut as a production designer. His debut movie was the 1985 movie, The Color Purple. Welch was able to secure a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Production Design for the movie.
