The patriarch of Brown family, Billy Brown is a reality TV personality and an author. He has lived as an expert outdoorsman in the wilderness of Alaska for decades however he is not a native of the place. He was born to Billy Joe Brown and his wife Kathryn Brown in Fort Worth, Texas on Dec 3, 1953, and raised there with his sister Kathy Jean Brown. However, Billy passed away on February 7, 2021, at the age of 68. He died of a seizure in Washington state.
Billy has authored books, “One Wave at a Time,” “The Lost Years” which are based on his life in Alaska and before. This less known author became a popular TV star after Discovery channel chose Billy and his family as the cast of “Alaskan Bush People.”
Billy was a bright kid from early days. He became an award-winning horse trainer, one of the country’s youngest certified divers, and an accomplished musician working “gigs” throughout Texas at a young age. His father, a businessman raised him in a luxurious life. Billy would get expensive birthday presents likes boats and cars from his parents. However, at the age of 16, he lost his family to an accident. His parents and sister traveling in a private plane across Texas crashed after it was caught in a thunderstorm causing their death on 2nd March 1969.
After the tragedy, more misery followed him. Allegedly, he was tricked to sign the document for an emancipation resulting in the loss of family property and fortunes. He was left broken with no family, money or address while he took the odd job for survival. Driven by loneliness, same year on 23rd October Billy got married to Brenda, a local teen from Texas. The pair lived married for five years before heading for a divorce. While Billy hasn’t been vocal about his first wife, he had two children from the marriage. After the split, he had no relationship as his children grew up in Texas.

Billy Brown love affair and married life with his second wife, Ami Brown
Billy met his wife Ami Brown, ten years after his first marriage. The two had a love at a first sight affair which according to Billy’s memoir “One Wave at a Time.” In the memoir, he recalled about his meeting with Ami as he wrote, “She was the beautiful young woman I had ever met.” After the whirlwind of romance, the couple tied the knot with a wedding ceremony on June June 16, 1979, at the time Ami was only 15 years old while Billy was 26.

Billy lived a life of traveler before he and his wife headed to Alaska with two young sons ages three years and 18 months in the mid-eighties. They didn’t have anything planned or had enough money for the stay. Billy initially worked labor jobs around towns. While seeking a new home soon, the family took refuge on an isolated Mosman Island. There the family ends up stranded for 18 months. Once rescued and returned to Port Protection, Billy and his wife chose to continue their lives in the bush. In 1994 Billy built a home in Haines, Alaska but the family home perished to ashes due to an accidental fire, there was no injury to the family.
This pioneer minded couple Billy and his wife Ami hadn’t always lived in bushes. In 2001, Billy and his family moved to Juneau a city in Alaska where Billy started selling his life stories recorded on CDs. Later to establish as writer Billy and his family moved to lower 48 states. Billy also had brief settled in Seattle, Santa Clarita, California on his motor Home. He had lived in and out of Alaska during his adventurous life. His memoir ” One Wave At A Time” eventually led Brown family as the cast of Discovery reality show “Alaskan Bush People.”

Billy Brown and his wife Ami Brown has seven children five son and two daughters. Ami gave birth to her eldest son Matt Brown and second son Bam Bam Brown before moving to Alaska. After the family moved, the pair had five more children Bear, Gabe, Noah, Snowbird, Rain Brown. Billy had a very thin or no relationship his two children from first marriage.
Billy Brown trouble with Law and Jail Time
Billy Brown and his second son Joshua were sentenced to 30 days in jail earlier part of 2016 as they falsely claimed dividend fee from the government between 2010 to 2013. The government distributes the share of profit from oil corporation to Alaska residents that have lived within the state for a full calendar year. During that period Bill and his family were not in Alaska, reportedly the family lived in the lower 48 states. Billy and his son had to pay fine in the form of money. Instead of jail time, father-son duo wore the ankle monitor for 30 days and served 40 hours of community service while their dividend form canceled for the lifetime.
