Selden was born on July 31, 1984, in the United States. Her family has German roots and once lived in Frankfurt.  She grew up living in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, with her parents David and Theresa Laidig different from her current primitive lifestyle. She got opportunities to explore the outdoors with her family during weekends and vacations.  After high school, she attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she met her husband, Tyler Selden. Both moved to Alaska in 2006.

Ashley is blessed with a relationship with her college sweetheart. She and Tyler, a Nebraskan, met during their course of study at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Not only did she find love, but also the person who would eventually lead to her dream life. In 2006, after Tyler graduated, they decided to move north, which also marks the start of their adventurous journey in Alaska. The head-over-heels couple took the wedding vows  “together in sickness and health,” on 5th September 2008.

Ashley and Tyler depend upon fishing, hunting, and fur trapping to sustain their lifestyle. They spent 6-8 months a year on the edge of Alaska, closely connected to the river and the woods.  They rare sled dogs to run trap line during winters, and collect fur to sell in the market. Meanwhile, the couple is responsible for feeding the dogs which they achieve by fishing enough Salmons.  Their married life is an inspiration for other married couples who seek to live as a free spirit away from the noise of the crowd and somewhat primitive.

Challenges are living like Selden’s, but they are happy to see it through every year. Ashley’s parents are not used to this lifestyle who take regular jobs. Since their marriage, Ashley and her husband have had two children: Sydney and Blaze.
