Her family line extends from Germany who has lived in Frankfurt.  She grew up living in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, with her parents David and Theresa Laidig different from her current primitive lifestyle. The time she got opportunities to explore outdoors with family was during weekends and vacations.  After completing high school, she attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she met her husband, Tyler Selden. Both moved to Alaska in 2006.

They spent 6-8 months a year on the edge of Alaska, closely connected to the river and the woods.  They rare sled dogs to run trap line during winters, and collect fur to sell in the market.
