Summer Bishil is as strong as her character, Margo Hanson, in the Syfy drama series The Magicians. Not deterred by the host of patriarchy around her, Bishil resembles her character in more ways than one. Often described as the mean girl on the show, Bishil hasn’t always had the straightest of paths to the industry. From setting off to central Asia during her early years, to adapting to a post 9/11 America, Bishil had to struggle with variables, which at times, even she was not aware of. However, much like Margo, Bishil came through and has seen a rise in her career as a Hollywood Actress. In this article, we will take a closer look at the wiki-bio of Summer Bishil.
Summer Yasmine Bishil was born on the 17th of July, 1988, in Pasadena, California. The youngest child of the family, Bishil is the third-born child to her Mexican mother and Indian father. In 1991, when Bishil was just three years old, she moved to Saudi Arabia and then to Bahrain, alongside her parents and brother. However, the 9/11 terrorist attack on the US put an end to Bishil’s stay, and her family moved to the States. However, the States after 9/11 was not what it used to be. Right through her early years, Bishil struggled to adapt to her school and society. Her family moved to a Mormon community in San Diego and Bishil was enrolled at a public school, where she was less than welcome.
“I hated it. I was called a whore on the first day of school, and somebody said they thought my dad funded terrorism. I just knew that nobody was ever going to want to be my friend there. I had panic attacks the first year of my life here.”
Her family later moved to Arcadia and Bishil spent most of her early life being homeschooled by her mother. She later attended Citrus College in Glendora, California.
Bishil began her career as an actress long before her move back to the States. Her first credited TV role came in 2005 when she played the part of Stacey in the hit TV series, The Days of Our Lives. After a few short roles in TV series including, Hannah Montanna, Drake & Josh, and Just for Kicks, Bishil landed her first film role, the 2007 movie Towelhead. She bagged an award in the Young Hollywood Awards 2008 for the Ones to Watch category for her role in the movie. Since then, Bishil has put her masterful acting to work on various movies including Crossing Over (2009), Mooz-Ium (2010), Public Relations (2010), The Last Airbender (2010), Pop Star (2013), and most recently on the 2018 movie, Under the Silver Lake.
While movie appearances have been few and far between for Bishil, her TV appearances paint a different story. Over the years, Bishil has played minor and major roles in the likes of Return to Halloweentown (2006), Three Rivers (2009), The Whole Truth (2010), 90210 (2011), Lucky 7 (2013), Blast Vegas (2014), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2014), and iZombie (2015). But for all her TV and movie appearances, Bishil is best known for her work in the series The Magicians. Bishil plays the enigmatic, strong, and wilful Margo Hanson. While the series wrapped up after five seasons in 2020, Bishil couldn’t be more excited about the future. Talking to Allure, Bishil revealed that she was excited to see what the future would hold for her.
“I’ve never been more excited and hopeful about my future because I feel like there are roles for all types of women now and all types of people. I feel like the conversation that we’re having now is really working and it is affecting change within the industry. More and more people are going to see themselves represented and it’s really exciting.”
