Early Life:

Sharon Fiddis Chong was born on the 1st of February, 1948, in Los Angeles, California. Born and raised in LA, Fiddis was interested in acting from a young age and wanted to pursue a career as an actress. However, she ended up moving to Canada and attended the Gladstone Secondary School in Vancouver. Following her high school graduation in 1966, Fiddis started performing not just as an actor but also as a comedian.

Professional Career:

While not much is known about Fiddis’s early career, she was first noticed in the 1980 comedy flick, Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie. She also starred in a few movies including Nice Dreams (1981) and Things Are Tough All Over (1982). Fiddis also took over the role of associate producer for several movies over the years including Still Smokin’ (1983) and Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers (1984), and Far Out Man (1990). Some of Fiddis’s well-acclaimed roles came as “Nancy Reynolds” in Sandman (1993), and “Professor Jones” in Class of Nuke ‘Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown (1991), credited as “Shelby Shepherd”.

While Fiddis had a few gigs as a comedian, she switched to comedy seriously after Cheech and Chong broke up in 1985 citing creative differences.

“It’s been twelve years now that I have been doing standup comedy. I started because Tommy and Cheech split up and Tommy started going on the road by himself. He was lonely and so he said, Shelby come with me. I was an actress then, and I said I will but I just don’t want to hang out in the hotel, so then Tommy said you can start by doing my intro. It grew and grew, then I got to open the show for Cheech and Chong – so that’s really helped my career.”

Following the pair’s reunion in 2008, Fiddis serves as the opening act for the duo and performed at sold-out comedy shows on their cross-country tour.

Personal life:

Shelby Fiddis Chong is happily married to Tommy Chong and the pair have been together since the early 1970s. They tied the knot in 1975 in Los Angeles, California. Tommy was previously married to Maxine Sneed from 1960-1970 making Shleby his second wife. In 1978, they adopted their eldest child, Marcus Wyatt Chong who was born in 1967. The pair have given birth to three of their own, Paris Chong, born in 1974, Gilbran Chong, born in 1981, and Precious Chong born in 1989.

Tommy has not just had an effect on Shelby’s personal life but also on her professional life. As Shelby puts it, he helps her write and to let go.

“He helps me write my shows, so when we are on stage we sort of inspire each other to be funnier – to just let go. We study tango together and we dance and just feel the music. He is very spiritual and reminds me of that side of living, where I am a little more materialistic and he is the true hippie in the family.”
