Born to Pauline Johnston, a music teacher, and Marion St. Pierre MacDowell, a lumber executive, MacDowell is the only child of the family. Her parents divorced early on in her life and given her mother’s alcoholic tendencies, things were far from normal for the family.

MacDowell began her professional career as a model. She got her lucky start during a trip to Los Angeles when she was scouted by an agent from Wilhelmina Models. She later changed agencies and moved to Elite Model Management in New York City in 1978.
