Dr. Kelleher is married to Greg Martin. The pair took the wedding vows on April 14, 1999, and in the many years of conjugal life, the pair has given birth to three children. Among the three Elba and Claire Martin are the girls and Myles Martin is the only son and the youngest. Her teenage daughter Claire has shown love for animals however she is yet to decide on her future.  The family of five resides in Loxahatchee, South Florida.

She joined Alfred University for her undergrad education and earned a Bachelor of Science degree with dual majors in Chemistry & Biology in 1990. She then joined the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and achieved her DVM degree. During her time there, she actively participated in the avian, exotic, and wildlife programs. She got to learn first-hand as a volunteer at the Clinch River Raptor Center. Toward the end of her senior year, she spent two months working with Dr. Jeff Jenkins in San Diego as a student extern.

Professional career:

After receiving her DVM degree, Dr. Kelleher started her Veterinary career in Florida where she moved to in August 1995. She worked for a small veterinary practice in South, Florida for the first three and half years. She wanted to open her own practice and took the plunge in 1999 founding “Broward Avian and Exotics Animal Hospital.” The animal treatment facility specializes in Avian and Exotic animals and has overseen pets like rabbits, ferrets, foxes, fish, birds, reptiles, marsupials, and even primates at her service. In addition to giving medical care, she likes to teach pet owners how to care for them properly. Over the years the good doctor has also suffered minor injuries from bites of animal patients such as birds, possums, skunks, rabbits, and lizards. On advice on owning an exotic pet, Dr. Kelleher has shared some specifics like doing their research and considering the animal’s natural history, behavior, lifespan, diet, housing, social needs, legal status, and medical care.

In an interview, she revealed the reason behind not accepting dogs and cats saying; “It’s just not my forte. I really like to just do the exotics.” 

In addition to working as a veterinarian, Dr. K gives her time as a volunteer. She volunteered for South Florida Wildlife Center in Fort Lauderdale for over 15 years. Also, she volunteered at Butterfly World in Pompano Beach as the official avian veterinarian. She occasionally gives presentations and lectures on her research and expertise in exotic animal medicine.

Besides being an Avian and Exotic animal veterinarian Dr. Kellher doubles down as a reality television actor. She is the star of the National Geography Wild’s reality show “Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER.”  The show follows the work performed by Dr. Kelleher and her team at Broward Avian and Exotics Animal Hospital located in Deerfield Beach, Florida. She made her show debut in season 1 episode 1 titled “Bunny Nose Job” which premiered on October 4, 2014. She made 50 episode appearances until nine seasons with the final episode ” Big Bite, Pig Attitude” airing on March 21, 2021. Even though the show is not canceled showrunners are yet to give the green light for the tenth season.
