Darlene worked for BronxNet for a year before joining WCBS Newsradio 88 one of the oldest radio stations in the country. She worked as a general assignment reporter at the station for four years, honing her skills and gaining experience in the field. She then made a return to television with WNBC in the late 90s.

At WNBC, Rodriguez started as a general assignment reporter and quickly rose through the ranks. She then became the co-anchor of Weekend Today in New York, a weekend morning show that features news, weather, sports, and entertainment segments. She co-anchored the show for a few years before moving to Today in New York, the weekday morning show that airs from 4 to 7 a.m. She became the co-anchor of the show in July 2003 and has been serving in that role ever since.
