It is safe to say that Beto O’ Rourke surprised quite a lot of people when he narrowly lost his nomination against Republican candidate Ted Cruz. Born and raised in a political family in El Paso, Texas, Beto is one of the new generations of politicians who are taking over the US politician scene. Despite having lost to senator Ted Cruz, Beto’s campaign attracted plenty of attention, at the center of which was his wife Amy Sanders. Like Beto, Sanders was born and raised in Texas and is the daughter of the real estate tycoon, William Sanders. Despite not having any political aspirations of her own, Sanders has been instrumental in helping Beto kick off his own. So, for this article, we will take a closer look at the wiki-bio of Amy Sanders.
Amy Hoover Sanders was born on the 28th of September 1981 in El Paso, Texas. Born to real estate tycoon, William Sanders, and Lounnan Sanders, Amy was raised in a large family. The middle daughter of the household, Amy has two brothers and two sisters, Richard, Pablo, Marianna, and Christina, and had to take care of her siblings from a very young age. As for her education, Amy enrolled at a local high school in El Paso before setting off to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, from where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Amy has always had a passion for teaching and decided to continue her life in academics past University. After receiving certification for her proficiency in Spanish, Amy moved to Guatemala City for a year. During her time in the city, she taught kindergarten at Colegio Americano de Guatemala. Upon her return to El Paso in 2004, Amy founded the charity school, La Fe Preparatory School. During her early years, Amy taught first and second grade before eventually becoming the superintendent from 2007 to 2013.
In 2013, Amy took up her position as the President of Stanton Street and was also a part of the charity organization, Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe. After 2017, Amy decided to leave her professional career and has been supporting her husband in his political aspirations. Despite that, she still serves as the director of education development for La Fe Community Development Corporation, and as the executive director of the La Fe Preparatory charter school.
Amy Sanders is happily married to Beto O’Rourke and the pair have been together since 2004. They first met when a friend set the duo for a blind date, and Beto took Amy to the famous Kentucky Club Bar in Juarez, Mexico. Of the first date, Amy told,
“He was giving me reasons 1 through 10 of why I needed to stay in El Paso. And I quickly learned that he just is an ultimate El Paso salesman.”
The pair hit it off almost instantly and got engaged within months of meeting. Apparently, Beto proposed to his wife to be on April Fools Day, and the pair got married five months after they were engaged. The pair tied the knot on the 24th of September, 2005. They went on to have three lovely children, Ulysses, 12, Molly, 10, and 8-year-old Henry.
Supportive of her husband:
While Amy hasn’t always enjoyed the idea of her husband’s political aspirations, she has been fully supportive of his decisions. In 2010, when Beto first broke the idea of running against Reyes for Representative, Amy felt hurt by the idea. However, she came around after two months and helped Beto make the decision to fight for the senate. Amy even supported his bid for the US presidency after the election of Donald Trump and her exact words were,
“I think you should go see if you can’t do something that’s more effective than what you’re doing now.”
