Alex grew up in New York City, where she attended Horace Mann School and graduated in 1987. She then pursued a degree in art history at Barnard College, which she completed in 1991.
Alex’s early childhood was filled with culinary experiences, as she watched her mother test various recipes at home while editing cookbooks. She learned to appreciate different cuisines and flavors, and developed a passion for food. She also traveled to France with her family, where she was exposed to the French culinary tradition and culture.
The 54-year-old began her career by working under the tutelage of Larry Forgione. Fresh out of her apprenticeship, Alex worked at several restaurants all around France, New York, and Los Angeles. During her years she worked at Guy Savoy’s La Butte Chaillot, Daniel Boulud’s eponymous restaurant, and Joachim Splichal’s Patina. After years of practice, Alex was handed the role of executive chef at Butter. She also served a similar position at The Darby restaurant before it closed. In 2023, she became the godmother of the Discovery Princess cruise ship, a role that involves blessing the ship and its passengers before its maiden voyage.
In 2007, she made her first appearance on Iron Chef America, where she competed against Cat Cora in the Farmers’ Market Battle. Although she lost the challenge, she impressed the judges and viewers with her skills and creativity. She became a regular judge on Chopped in 2009, and also hosted her own shows, The Cooking Loft and Alex’s Day Off. In 2012, she won the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef: Redemption, becoming the second female chef to join the ranks of Iron Chefs. Since then, she has continued to appear on various Food Network programs, as well as other media outlets. She has also received numerous awards and recognitions for her work.
She is also a frequent judge and competitor on various Food Network shows, such as Iron Chef America, Guy’s Grocery Games, and Supermarket Stakeout. She is also the host of her own show, Alex vs. America, where she challenges herself to cook with different cuisines and ingredients across the country.
She is also the author of cookbooks such as Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook, The Home Cook: Recipes to Know by Heart, Cook with Me: 150 Recipes for the Home Cook, and Cook It Up: Bold Moves for Family Foods.

After her divorce, Alex found love again with Michael Castellon, a chef and restaurateur. They got engaged in June 2020. However, their engagement did not lead to marriage.
