Beverle Lorence “Bebe” Buell was born on the 14th of July, 1953. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Buell is the only child in the family. Born to  Dorothea (Brown) Johnson and Harold Lloyd Buell, Buell’s father was not home at the time of her birth and was stationed for his assignment as a U.S. Navy officer. So until Harold came back and named his daughter, the nurses took to calling her, Baby Buell, which was how she got her nickname, Bebe.

Life as a model:

Buell was first spotted by the modeling agency executive Eileen Ford. At the time, Buell had just graduated high school and was 17 years of age. When she was 18 years of age, Buell came down to New York, and while she wanted to pursue her career as a singer, she ended up working as a model. Buell was  Playboy magazine’s Playmate of the Month for the November 1974 issue, and her centerfold picture was taken by Richard Fegley. Talking about her early life in modeling, Buell revealed that it was modeling that brought her to music. 

 “[I wanted] to be a professional singer [which was why] I came to New York—yes, I was a pretty young girl, so I fell into the modeling thing, and [then] I did Playboy, so then the rock stars came a-hunting, as I like to say.”

Life in music:

Despite her early association with modeling, it was music that most interested Buell. And while her life in New York had been glamorous, she lacked the rock-and-roll. In an interview with stay thirsty, Buell revealed,

“I went to Max’s. Max’s Kansas City. I mean, I had gone out and done other things in New York but I hadn’t had a real rock n’ roll night until I went to Max’s. And that was it. Once I went into Max’s I felt like all my kindred spirits and all my friends and everybody that was going to be part of my life was in that room. And I knew it. I went to Max’s and never left!”

Buell recorded her first song EP on Rhino Records in 1981 and established the rock band the Power Station alongside her then-boyfriend, John Taylor. While she also formed the band B-Sides in 1980 it disbanded in 1985. The same year, Buell put up the Gargoyles and but the band disbanded after Liv Tyler’s paternity became public in 1991. Buell withdrew from performing for six years to manage Liv’s career for six years but made a return in 2000. She released a single and started Bebe Buell Band. In May of 2009, Buell released the single, Air Kisses for the Masses, and also recorded a 12-song album. Buell’s last album was  Hard Love which was released in 2011.

Buell had a relationship with Todd Rundgren from 1972 to 1978. She became pregnant with Liv Tyler during her brief relationship with Steven Tyler. Buell tied the knot for the first time in 1992 to musician and actor Coyote Shivers. The pair called things off in 1999 and Buell tied the knot to musician Jim Wallerstein in 2002.
